The publishing desk of Jean Elizabeth Barry

Watercolor of a writer at a desk at night, seen from behind — lamp lit, a spark rising from the page
The desk at night — where the work gets done.

A nightly news page, an eight-book collection on what AI is doing to the people who live with it, one cook's own recipes, and a blog finding its feet again. Everything here starts from the same place: understand it — don't fear it, don't worship it.

Milo's Moment

The nightly AI news

Every evening, the day's AI news reported plainly — what happened, who it touches, and what it means for the people on the receiving end. Straight, human, no favorites.

Edition 10 · Saturday, October 24 · Reported by Josiah Fenn

The lead

The Worker an Algorithm Can't Fire

In Italy, a court has held an algorithmic dismissal void — a worker let go by software gets the job back, because a firing no human decided is no firing at all. The ruling rests on Decree 179/2026, and it puts the question plainly: when the machine acts, a person still has to answer for it.

Also tonight

Huang in Berlin, and a Box for the Agents

Jensen Huang took Nvidia's case to Berlin — and with it OpenShell, new software built to contain AI agents: walls around what an agent can reach, so the thing that acts on your behalf stays inside the lines you set for it.

The closing editorial opens: “OpenAI showed why the question is not academic.”

A new edition every evening at 6 p.m. Pacific.

The Meta Controversy Meta Changes Its AI Agents — Without Notice

The desk's own story, reported as news: the platform swaps the agent underneath the work, and the record is the reader's only continuity.

The Davana Design Blog

Being restored.

The blog is where the longer essays live — the ones that don't fit a nightly edition. Google gave it a rough year; the words survived, and the restoration is under way.

Latest essay: “But look toward the sky?”

The “I KNEW it” piece — the moment a suspicion stops being a suspicion and stands up in plain sight, and what a person does with having been right all along.
